What to call our new Council?

The Government has made it’s decision about what local Councils we will have from next year.  Both Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council will no longer exist. They are to be replaced by a new Council which will undertake all their functions a, and cover all the way from Carlisle, and the whole west coast – Workington, Whitehaven and right down to Millom.

The Government calls this ‘West Cumbria’. For us you can’t get much further north than Longtown, and you can’t get much further EAST than Bewcastle or Kershopefoot. The new County will be very similar in area to the old county of Cumberland, abolished in the 70s, so perhaps that name should get a reprise?

Help us get the best deal for our local area

Have you filled in our Residents Survey yet? We’re asking local residents across the local area for what issues matter to you, and things we can do to keep the area a great place to live.

This is important because of the review of local councils in Cumbria currently being undertaken by the Government. It is likely that there will be less councils, with Carlisle Council itself being abolished. Decisions about our local area are likely to be taken by a much larger Council.

That’s why we want to hear from you about the local issues that matter to you, and your experience of living in the local area.
